Project Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is improving northbound I-15 in Salt Lake County by adding a new general purpose lane from Bangerter Highway to 9400 South and a collector-distributor system** from 9400 South to I-215. This project will help increase mobility and reduce congestion along I-15. Construction is expected to begin summer 2019 and continue through 2020.

*What is a design-build project?

Design-build is a project delivery method used in the construction industry. Both the design and construction services are contracted by a single entity known as the design-builder or design-build contractor.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) uses this project delivery method to accelerate project completion by overlapping the design phase and the construction phase. Design-build allows UDOT and the contractor to include the most innovative and up-to-date construction solutions, reduce impacts to the public and ensure a quality product for the people of Utah.

**What is a collector-distributor system?

A collector-distributor system parallels the mainline freeway and connects to more than one entrance/exit to the freeway. This system improves traffic flow by allowing mainline through traffic to bypass exit and entrance ramps. (See graphic below).
